KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu Education Department has been advised to act more aggressively to prevent fighting and bullying in schools.
Terengganu Criminal Investigation Department head, ACP K Manoharan, said the police had already received reports on 10 cases of criminal offences involving students during the first five months of this year.
“Although there are not many cases, the police view seriously the problem and hope the Education Department will take the necessary action.
“We always monitor the situation through the respective schools’ liaison officer, as well as organise programmes like Crime Prevention Club and the police cadet,” he told reporters at his office here Monday.
He said previously, various approaches had been implemented, including penalising the students involved, but they still could not address the problem.
Parents, he said, should also play their role by monitoring their children’s activities and movements, as well as providing the children with religious education.
On the incident of a Form Two student of Sekolah Menengah Bukit Tunggal receiving seven stitches after he was assaulted by a schoolmate last Wednesday, Manoharan said police were waiting for the victim’s medical report and also the report from the school before forwarding the case to the public prosecutor’s office for further action. – Bernama
