Bullying Lawsuit on the Horizon

BALTIMORE – Several Liberty Union parents have filed assault charges against a teen they say has been a bully within the school district for years.

According to Baltimore police reports, this teen is the same bully parent Steve Grimm confronted the school district about weeks ago.

Bob Denny, who has two sons in Liberty Union schools, is now filing a civil protection order against this teen in Fairfield County court.

“The verbal threats are I’m going to kill you, I’m coming after you, I’m going to beat you down,” explained Denny, who says he became fed up when school administrators failed to handle the situation.

“We’re not going to take it, I think our next step is to deal with the administration and remove zero tolerance from our school district,” he said.

ABC 6/ Fox 28 reporter A.J. Ross was able to obtain a copy of the accused teen’s juvenile records, which show four assault charges now pending.

“It is unfortunate that parents have to come through my door as an attorney and start taking legal steps to get something done,” said attorney Roger Weaver who is now representing the Denny family.

Weaver says the civil protection order against this teen will be filed in Fairfield County court next Tuesday.  Weaver is also in the process of drafting a formal letter to Liberty Union Superintendent Paul Mathews to request a meeting within the next 10 days.

Denny says he wants the teen expelled from Liberty Union Middle School.  If the district fails again to confront these ongoing bullying issues, Denny says he and Mr. Weaver are prepared to file a civil suit.

“We are gathering parents together we’ve started a website called KeepLUsafe.org,” he said.

“One only needs to read the paper, be on the internet, and understand that this issue of bullying in schools, one could argue is at epidemic proportion,” said Mr. Weaver.   “We’re going to stop it at Liberty Union.”

School district responds to bullying lawsuit

7 Apr

Eau Claire (WQOW) – A local school district is denying claims after a lawsuit is filed over bullying.

Wally Ellenson played for the Memorial High School basketball team a few years ago before his family moved to Rice Lake.  His family claims Wally suffered physical and emotional injuries as a result of bullying from his Old Abe teammates and the coach.  Ellenson’s family says the district failed to prevent the bullying after being made aware of it.  They recently filed a civil lawsuit.

The Eau Claire Area School District has now responded and is denying those claims.  The district says the family was told the proper complaint procedure in bullying cases, but says the Ellenson’s didn’t use it.  It also says Ellenson assumed the risk of injury by playing basketball.
