Ortiz bullies Berto

17 Apr

By Kirk Jackson: At the Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut, in a candidate for fight of the year, the bout between WBC Welterweight Champion Andre Berto and challenger Victor “Vicious” Ortiz far exceeded the expectations of many viewers. A contrast in styles, with Berto being the quick handed fighter relying on speed, reflexes, while also possessing decent punching power and Ortiz, the aggressive, crowd friendly, powerful brawler.

There were many questions regarding both fighters entering this fight, and is seems all the questions were answered.

There was the question of whether Ortiz would carry his punching power and overall strength in to this match up, and how he would handle the pressure of a big time championship fight.

For Berto, the questions were in regards to how his chin would hold up against a fighter with good punching power, and if the recent string of mediocre opposition would hurt him in this fight.

The first half of this twelve round fight action filled, culminating in the sixth round, with each fighter trading knockdowns. But it was Ortiz who emerged from the chaos as the stronger fighter.

Ortiz fighting his first fight as a welterweight appeared to be the bigger, stronger man throughout the night. Living up to his moniker “Vicious” Ortiz, aside from the few knockdowns and brief moments of vulnerability, stormed through Berto’s best shots, especially through the later stages of the fight. Ortiz constantly applied enormous amounts of pressure, bullying the champion at close range and steadily breaking down the Haitian star Berto.

Overwhelmed by the incessant force from Ortiz, it seemed Berto never fully recovered from the two knockdowns he suffered and could not find his rhythm in the fight. Ortiz capitalized on every moment, outworking Berto to earn unanimous decision.

Both men displayed badges of honor and bled courage in tonight’s classic clash. Although both fighters should be commended for their efforts, especially since both fighters were scrutinized entering this fight, it is Berto who needs to go back to the drawing board.

As mentioned earlier, Berto has been criticized for the lack of quality opposition. Not always facing legitimate contenders, Berto surely will be questioned if whether he is a legitimate, elite fighter himself, or just overrated.

Entering this fight Ortiz was accused of having a lack of heart and dedication for the sport of boxing because of his questionable previous efforts against the likes of Marcos Maidana and Lamont Peterson. Maidana earned a TKO victory in back and forth thriller and Peterson fought Ortiz to a controversial draw.

Ortiz may have silenced many of his critics tonight, fighting like a man possessed for the entire fight.

A huge step for both fighters although each in the opposite direction with the future uncertain. Ortiz may end up in the running for the Mayweather-Pacquiao sweepstakes or may end up fighting Amir Khan or Timothy Bradley somewhere in the near future. While Berto is still young and talented enough to rebound from this defeat. Not certain on how things will pan out, but hopefully somewhere down the line Ortiz and Berto face off again in a rematch.

Taunting him like a ‘pack of wolves’, this is the shocking moment a gang of feral teens turns on a boy of 13 and tortures him during seven minutes of bullying hell.

The gang punched Nadin Khoury to the floor, then dragged him along the snow while screaming vile abuse before hanging him upside down in a tree.

When he fell out face first they chased him down and used his coat to hang his limp body on a seven-foot-high spiked fence post.

The shocking incident was filmed by one of the gang on their mobile phones.

After Nadin told his mother what happened six pupils aged between 13 and 17 at Upper Darby High School in Philadelphia, PA, were arrested on kidnapping and assault charges.

The incident has shocked the entire city with many appalled that such a callous act could be carried out by children so young.

Veteran Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said it was the worst case of bullying he had ever seen and that it was a miracle Nadin was still alive.

He branded the attackers ‘thugs’ and said: ‘Seven on one. That’s a wolf pack.’

But he also hit out at the ‘walk on by’ attitude of those in the neighbourhood where it took place who did nothing to intervene.

‘In broad daylight and nobody called 9-1-1. Yet people will state that the cops are never around.

‘Crime is a community problem, and if the community doesn’t care enough about what’s going on in their community, how are we going to do anything?’ he said.

The appalling incident happened near Nadin’s Park Lane East apartment complex.

The five-minute video – which does not capture the entire thing – begins with the gang shoving and punching Nadin so that he falls to the snow-covered ground.

As they swarm over him and scream: ‘Get up!’ and ‘f****** b****’ one of them grabs his legs and pulls him across the snow.

Nadin can be heard screaming like a wounded animal and can be heard saying: ‘No! No!’ as he is dragged 30ft and spun in a circle.

Two of the gang then pick him up and stuff him between the branches of a tree but he falls out and runs off.

They then catch up him and, in the most disturbing sequence of them all, they try and hoist him up on the metal spike whilst he howls: ‘Let me go! Nooo! Let me go!’

As he sits aloft their arms, a woman passer-by walks right past – and does nothing.

Nadin and his parents Eric and Rebecca Wright were shown the footage by the Philadelphia Daily News for the first time and were unable to watch.

‘Are you kidding me? Are you serious?’ Mrs Wright said.

With tears in her eyes she added: ‘I can’t watch it. I’m just speechless. What did he do to deserve it?’

‘I don’t know how much punishment they can give them. I just want them to stop doing what they’re doing. They should be able to control what’s inside them.

‘I want the word to get out there that it’s not right.’

Mr Wright added: ‘I grew up in an era when it was one on one.

‘Now, kids think they got something to prove. They all want to be a gangster.’

Nadin, who wants to be a marine, told the newspaper: ‘They started beating me up and putting me on the gate and I had got caught on the gate.

‘They just started punching me in the stomach and then when I got down, they started stomping me.

‘For the first two days, some parts of my body still hurt, but after that, I just got mad every time I thought about it.’

The six accused are currently being held in Delaware County Juvenile Detention Centre. They said nothing as they were led out of the Upper Darby police station to be taken there.

A seventh suspect is still on the loose.

Darby High School superintendent Lous DeVleiger said in statement: ‘All of those involved were members of our alternative school program that is located in an isolated facility away from the high school proper for students who have exhibited poor decisions in the past and are therefore removed from the high school to protect the regular high school student population.

‘This alternative program has been very successful in helping to rehabilitate many students.’
